"I'm as frustrated as anyone. You can't read a single thing that's been highlighted. Had I been there to advise [former CIA director] Allen Dulles, I would have suggested the traditional yellow color—or pink."

Goss added: "There was probably some really, really important information in these documents."

When asked by a reporter if the black ink was meant to intentionally obscure, Goss countered, "Good God, why?"

Goss lamented the fact that the public will probably never know the particulars of such historic events as the Cold War, the civil-rights movement, or the growth of the international drug trade.

"I'm sure the CIA played major roles in all these things," Goss said. "But now we'll never know for sure."

This is hilarious, check out the link for the full story....<br This does appear to be a rumour at this point, but I'm scared, I love stumbleupon! They can't change anything. You may remember my previous post about it, and my link is to your left if you want to check out my pages. I do get allot of my traffic from the company, seeing how I did stumble my blog a few times for things like XP tips, but not every article that's for sure. According to the CEO Garret " the company has 1.5 million registered users and an average of 3.5 million page views per day" They can expect to be cash flow positive withing the next few months also.

I have to admit lately I've been seeing allot more retail sites via my stumbles, and I usually give them the thumbs down unless its a really great product, or there is something special I like about it. That's the point of the site is to explore pages with a social network that consists of contacts and pages connected by similar interests. I wouldn't like to see the quality of my stumbles start to decline into an advertising machine...but I do like to read cool blogs and the opinions of others which may be why I justify my site adding.

I guess its in the hands of the users, us. If we continue to like or dislike our sites, the money grabbers will be weeded out by our selections, and the tool will continue to produce quality stumbles. Its in our hands!!

Do I agree with trying to make a quick buck through it? NO, but in a world where businesses may be "made or broke" by Google's page rank, its pretty tempting to do whatever is possible to drive traffic to a site. In fact, driving traffic has become a business itself and so on.

Is this the end of social networking powered sites? Has the ugly corporate hand stepped in again and tainted another great idea? Or can the "Social" aspect of these tools still police itself..I think its up to the people..

/> So coming back to the original topic, I hope we can keep this cool gadget in our hands, don't sell!! Keep the money grabbing honest and keep off my pages!

Ahem,,, if you liked the article, feel free to click on an adsense add on your way out by goooooogle hehehehe

Jill :)

Technorati Tags: Stumbleupon for sale, web 2.0, technology, tech news

powered by performancing firefox

How to Ditch your Cell Phone Plan

I was on Wired News today, and found a pretty good article that gives some good tips on how to get out of your cell phone contract. Some of the reasons are actually the cause of someone wanting out, others are the result of an impulse buy to get the newest phone I imagine as cheap as possible. We all have made cell phone blunders, and got stuck with bills, a bad company or bad bad service. Most of us are locked in to these giant cooperation's, having no choice to go along with it, until your plan runs out and then suddenly you are their best friend again! I say skip the contract if you can, and read the small print when signing all the time, shop around, don't impulse buy! This will save you the headaches of a bad decision for up to 3 years or even more. This is what they recommended : You can find link to the actual content here :http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/14.08/howtodigital.html

Here's a brief Rundown

»Be a squeaky wheel. Say you want out because the service isn't up to par. (And really, is it?) Then back that up by filing official complaints online with the Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau.

(In Canadathis would be the BBB or numerous requests to speak to higher ups at the "Business office in my experience)

»Get off the grid. Study your provider's coverage map and find a town (maybe in Alaska?) with absolutely no service. Then tell the company you're moving there. They're not legally required to cut you loose, but frustrated consumers have reported success.

*This should work for other countries too... but don't actually move there! And if you are in an area where service is crappy, let them know!

»Join the Army. Some people have finagled their way out of a contract by claiming they just got orders to ship off to Iraq. Be warned: You may be asked for documentation.

*I'm not sure I agree with this one these days...lolont>

»Try a market-based fix. StarStart uphref="http://celltradeusa.com/" target="new">Celltradeusa.com matches unhappy mobile customers with people who'd like to sign up - at a discount, of course. You'll pay a $20 fee to sell your contract on the block.

»Shrink your plan. As a last resort, cut back to the bare minimum the provider allows and drop any frills, like picture-messaging. Depending on the number of months you have left, this could be cheaper than paying the typically prorated termination fee, which can often run up to $200.

Most of these would work, not sure about the second to last, I recommend being as nice and polite as possible, stating your reasons up front and then going as high up as you can, from my experience with working with Telcos and providers, the sqeeky wheel does get the grease, and a pleasant demeanour will get you way further than angry complaints like everyone else..try that first.

Happy cancelling!

The end of Internet Boredom as we know it: Stumbleupon!!

Although many of you may be already familiar with this amazing FireFox extension, for those of you who aren't, its time to join one of then newer WEB 2.0 concepts! The more "friends" you have, the more pages you will be exposed to, and the best thing I like is every page I like is recorded for me in a great online profile. Mines to the left, the URL is http://jedichica.stumbleupon.com
You are welcome to have a peek at my blog and favorite sites which are all automatically categorized or tagged for you. You can also create your own personal tags, as I have for Blogging, or to refer to my friends. It has a crazy menu option that allows you to send you pages to other friends with the click of a button, and also has an inbox and awesome social network of great people that you can meet, that have the same interests as you! Its a great way to keep in touch with acquaintances and best friends, and the categories are almost unlimited, including some GREAT pics and adult sites if you are into that. Remember, someone wanted to bookmark these pages in the first place, its people motivated, not sponsors, so its really great! It is also available for Internet Explorer, I believe all recent versions... check it out at http://www.stumbleupon.com/
and feel free to visit me at my site above and add me as a friend to see my pages if you like them! I have to warn you though, its VERY addictive and pretty much can keep you occupied all day if you are a Internet junkie like me! For those of you that have it, I'm sure you love it, for those of you that don't, get it,,that's an order! Its free and will give you the best of the best that's out there, chosen by people just like you!!

Heres what the "experts" had to say:
" Channel surf the Internet with StumbleUpon! Imagine that, our spelling mistakes are now making money online! But for the regular ebay user, this seems to be a great idea..I'll try Dimonds, or corvetes, maybe I can get a great deal too! The site claims, and I quote:

"

What is Typo Hound?

Many eBay auctions contain typos in the title listing. For example, 'toshiba' may be spelt 'toshia'. This means that when someone searches for ''toshiba', the misspelled 'toshia' is not shown. Thus no bids are placed on the 'toshia' auction entry.

Typo Hound generates common misspelled variants of the keyword. This allows you to find the elusive 'toshia' listing. Since no one else can find the auction with eBay search to bid on it, you bag yourself a bargain!"

How does it work?

Typo Hound generates the following typos:

Character typed twice

Character omitted

Characters swapped

Key next to correct character hit

Key next to correct character and Not everyone knows how to handle these attacks, adn this site seems to be really informative!
It describes email abuse as " The use of electronic mail to advertise unethically, harass, annoy, or cause harm to the email recipient. Abuse can take the form of bulk email, threatening email, email sent with the intent to slow productivity of, or cause damage to, the recipient's system. It is a world wide problem and anyone with an email address is vulnerable. "

That just about sums it up! But what do you do in an age where it seems the only option is to impose high security levels on your inbox that prevent new friends and important emails you have requested if you happen to forget to add the address to your contact list!

There are a few tips I know if that help me:
1. Create a "fake" email address, if you are using it online to sign up for anything, or have to give it out for any reason, use that one. Go through it about once a week and clear out the spam. Reserve your REAL email address for friends and contacts, that way you don't have to build an iron wall around your inbox.

2. Never never give out sensitive information through email, any reputable company will not contact you this way, its not secure. If you have your doubts, contact the company directly to ask why they are sending you this email, chances are its a scam.

3. No one ever wins anything over email, they will call you, if you don't remember the name or company, contact over the phone and never release information

4. MY BIGGEST BEEF of all is FORWARDS! There are people out there in the business of collecting email addresses, and you and your friends forward along these tear jerker, cute pics, pleas for help (which are fake) and suburban warnings... after a few round abouts someone has a really extensive list of email addresses they can spam. Lets not forget some peoples emails also include personal work signatures with phone numbers ect. How dangerous is that? If you MUST pass on a forward PLEASE deleate all unrelevant information from the email and send it to one person, asking that they do not forward your email address on again. Sorry, big BEEF of mine!

5. If your email client has a spam blocker use it, if you see a spam message, mark it as spam, the domain name won't return.

I reccommend GMAIL as it has a great spam filter, catches %90 percent before it hit my inbox, and has an easy spam marker too, thunderbird makes a great Pop3 client also, you can download it from Mozilla.org, and it acts the same way as outlook or outlook express, only alot better :P

Last but not least, never hesitate to contact your ISP (internet service provider) or email provider (EX.GMAIL) they are always eager to help and can find out whos really behind these issues, and block their usage if necessary!

Coolest Pic Ever

Deals all the way to Free!

Well everyone likes free stuff, or a great site that points us in the right direction with out being tricked or spammed or having to sign up with 100 friends and their children. Those changes will affect the U.S. West, Australia and Brazil, even though it's on South America's eastern coast.

For the Mediterranean, the issue has more to do with rainfall in the tropical Atlantic Ocean changing air currents, he said.

"Extreme events are the kinds of things that have the biggest impacts, not only on humans, but on mammals and ecosystems," Meehl said. The study, to be published in the December issue of the peer-reviewed journal Climatic Change, "gives us stronger and more compelling evidence that these changes in extremes are more likely."

This is not good news for already drought stricken areas, and the thing we need is more tropical storms and hurricanes after last year..!

he measurement of warm nights saw the biggest forecast changes. Every part of the globe is predicted to experience a tremendous increase in the number of nights during which the low temperature is extremely high. Those warm night temperatures that should happen only once every decade will likely occur at least every other year by the time we reach 2099, if not more frequently, Tebaldi said.
Warm nights are crucial because Chicago's 1995 heat wave demonstrated that after three straight hot nights, people start dying, Meehl said. However, heat wave deaths are decreasing in the United States because society has learned to adapt better, using air conditioning, noted University of Alabama at Huntsville atmospheric sciences professor John Christy. He is one of a minority of climate scientists who downplay the seriousness of global warming.

Similarly, the days when the temperature drops below freezing will plummet worldwide. That's not necessarily a good thing, because fewer frost days will likely bring dramatic change in wildlife, especially bug infestation, Tebaldi said.

"It's a disruption of the equilibrium that's been going for many centuries," Tebaldi said. But she noted that a lengthier growing season in general is good.

"This notion of the greening of the planet ... generally is a positive benefit," Christy said.

Christy, who did not participate in the study but acknowledges that global warming is real and man-made, said an increase in nighttime low temperatures makes much more sense than the rain-and-drought forecasts of the paper.

One of the larger changes in precipitation predicted is in the intensity of rain and snowfall. That means, Tebaldi said, "when it rains, it rains more" even if it doesn't rain as often.

Tebaldi's assessment jibes with the National Climatic Data Center's tracking of extreme events in the United States, said David Easterling, chief of the center's scientific services. Easterling's group has created a massive climate extreme index that measures the weather in America. Now we have to remember this is not a dedicated connection, like a telephone or cable line, but a signal that travels through the air at a certain frequency or *channel* and things as small as a cell phone, TV, remote control, or carpet EMI could cause it to not work or drop. Basically if your ISP can get a clear signal into your home to your modem, the rest is your issue. Here are some things that can help.

1. Upgrade to XP, use the included software in XP to connect, not the one that comes with your card.

2. If you must use 98SE or up, make sure you have the most up to date drivers for your card, you would be surprised how many card come with outdated technology, remember it moves fast. Most wireless cares should come with free instillation support, or call your ISP for instructions, they may be able to help, maybe not. Worst case scenario, hook it up via the Ethernet cable, and get online and download new drivers or find the information first. That reminds me, make sure your computer CAN and has been connected via another means to the Internet before trying to hook up wireless, its better to find out before you've spent 7 hours on the phone with some guy in India (NOT that they don't know there stuff, communication is at times difficult!)

3. The placement of your router is KEY
-don't put it anywhere from any electrical devices..aka that speaker its sitting on, or the carpet, get that antenna as high into the air as possible for maximum coverage
-remember if you can't use a TV remote control through the walls, wireless will have a hard time too. Whats in between your PC and the router? A bathroom with ceramic tiles? Is it in the basement surrounded by cement? get it in a central location to your computers and play with it, location is key
-if need be you can pick up those wireless extenders, they are pretty sharp and work well
-Log into the firmware, (contact your ISP for instructions or router company) and change the channel..your cordless phone could be on the same frequency as your router.
- If your wired computer works fine, chances are its either your card, drivers for your card, or your router, it is going to cut out once and awhile, that's normal, but should reconnect asap when it does. When in doubt, look for the activity light on the card, if its not flashing, power off and on the computer and router for 30 seconds each... computer first, router second, and then try it, Anymore home networking wireless questions, let me know, I'm running a SS 6520 and it works great...

Speed Up Windows XP!

Services You Can Disable

There are quite a few services you can disable from starting automatically.
This would be to speed up your boot time and free resources.
They are only suggestions so I suggestion you read the description of each one when you run Services
and that you turn them off one at a time.

Some possibilities are:

Alerter - Sends alert messages to specified users that are connected to the server computer.

Application Management - Allows software to tap directly into the Add/Remove Programs feature via the Windows Installer technology.

Background Intelligent Transfer Service - The Background Intelligent Transfer service is used by programs (such as Windows AutoUpdate) to download files by using spare bandwidth.

Clipbook - ClipBook permits you to cut and paste text and graphics over the network.

Error Reporting Service - Allows applications to send error reports to Microsoft in the event of an application fault.

Fast User Switching - Windows XP allows users to switch quickly between accounts, without requiring them to log off.

Help and Support - Allows the XP Built-in Help and Support Center to run.

IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service - You don't need this if you have other software to create CDs.

Indexing Service - Indexes contents and properties of files on local and remote computers; provides rapid access to files through flexible querying language.

IP SEC - Manages IP security policy and starts the ISAKMP/Oakley (IKE) and the IP security driver. Not one of the many I've been keeping for years and years, but maybe one that will earn me some money and I can write about what interests me all the time, and I'd love to EARN a fan base. I say earn because it takes alot to make it on someones RSS list or to get someone to come back!
I've been going through the "important stuff", search engine submission programs, which once you download the free version tell you that they won't submit for free! Adsense, Stat counters, Labels, customizing my blog templates, learning HTML, it goes on. I feel my information and tech support experiance is valuable, and I love helping people, which I guess is my purpose. I hope to have an email support site in the future, with paypal hooked up, I have many dreams, and I love blogging. I guess I'm so tired of playing with this thing I'm just going to write about it for a bit!
If anyone has some tips on getting more sucess, and I'm researching believe me, as this is one of my side dreams, I'd love to hear from you via email in my profile or comment away!
The main drive here is I love technology and learning and sharing new ideas and things, and I hope to have that as a reason enough to be here, the rest will be hard work and dedication, but I'll enjoy it. I'm a "geek" at heart and this is my place!

ENJOY!

Jill

Google rumours confirmed!

Well, ever since Google bought Writely, a web word processor earlier this year, I knew something was up... after just releasing an "Excel" type spreadsheet program a few months ago, its now got a great word processor to back it up. I love google, I have to admit, I live google, I wake up to it, I use gmail, I use everything google has come out with to at least try it, but this I love. My vision is indeed a world where all my software is available online and accessible via my google account. I live the Calender, they have integrated that really nicely I think.
The goal here, as the article states is to rival Microsoft, which has already had to go "Outlook live" due to this and may now have to start offering more. The perks? Lots!
*Online storage
*accessible from any computer with an Internet connection
*FREE
*easily merges with all other services and will continue to seamlessly as time progresses

Its also apparently, quality wise, quite reliable and comparable to Microsoft's products, with none of the price or PC based compatibility issues.

I'm not sure if any of you have heard of the old "I-opener". During one of my last jobs I was quite intrigued by this "old technology" and see it coming back again as the future. It basically had enough memory to access online resources and that's about it, no more. Cheap, and quick. In the future I wonder what the home PC will consist of.... a great graphics card, fast Internet connection, and hardware to SUPPORT Internet applications but that's about it. Imagine a world where there is no need to load anything, you log into your online OS, get your settings, and start using your online stored software, play your online based games, and check your WEB mail. If google keeps it up this will all be free to us. This kind of competition also forces big competitors to give the consumer a break, make some services available for free to us, offer quality programs that are compatible in this world at a cheaper price. In order to send a resume I should have purchased a 200$ ++ office suite to make sure my employers could open it. That does not help. Kudos for google to making this stuff everyday easier and more convenient...

This should rawl up the latest privacy protection acts, but if you aren't planning a terrorist attack I don't see how you should be concerned....

Here's the link to get there...you need a google account, sign up and start enjoying an example of Web 2.0 and all its new befits!! https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=writely&passive=true&continue=http%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2F&ltmpl=WR_tmp_2_lfty&nui=1

Jill

Microsoft to offer free Vista Upgrades?

Well, for my first post I'm going to have to talk about this one. Recently I found an article that was posted on www.downloadsquad.com. I love this site, don't get me wrong, I have a RSS feed on my Google home page. I'd just like to throw some caution into the wind about this though.
The site claims that if you buy a new PC in the future, Microsoft will be offering free Vista upgrades if it has XP on it. This opinion may be true, but be careful!
I used to work for Microsoft Replacement Parts, we did honor a "Technology Guarantee" which stated that if a RETAIL BOXED COPY was purchased within 6 months of a newer technology being released, we would honour an upgrade at no fee to the consumer. This was Microsoft's rule, and this is legit.
Now here's the clincher, and the article does state that they are working on this with partners. Most computers purchased with a pre-installed operating system carries what is called an OEM copy. What this means is that Dell for example, has purchased a bulk license at a discounted price from Microsoft for windows XP. Now before this copy goes on your new PC it is loaded with your PC SPECIFIC software as well as the OS. Because this is no longer a full retail version, all support in Microsoft's eyes is referred back to the Vendor, ex Dell. These copy's are cheaper to the consumer and MUST be included with hardware. Sometimes, its sad to see, these copy's are sold on popular websites with, say, a keyboard, technically a piece of hardware. The issue is when it comes to bulk licenses, as the article stated, when you purchased a new PC with the OS already on, 99.9 percent of the time its going to be OEM. Therefore is Dell for example, going to carry on this price of upgrading and honouring this new Vista operating system to all its customers. This would be very very costly to them. You can't just install a new operating system on your computer and expect things to go smoothly, I've made that mistake. Where are all the drivers for things such as a network card or a wireless card. All your pre-installed settings are going to have to be reconfigured, this is easy for a person well seasoned with computers, to backup all these things first, but for the average computer user, you are going to get a severe headache and end up taking your PC to a tech for alot more money then a free upgrade. You see that CD you got with your new PC has all that information on it already, and the OS has been tuned for your computer with settings already in place. Its been modified. Its not a full version anymore. Microsoft can't help you here, they don't have the additional software to install for you, and I'm not sure that these vendors are going to take on the responsibility of reconfiguring all of your computers for a new operating system. Free support is not going to be free anymore, its going to cost alot more money, where does this cost come from?
SO, to save your butt:

*Contact the vendor before purchasing your machine to check with them whats going to happen if and when you want to upgrade, also be sure your new PC IS Vista ready

*Home Builders- Buy the full version, make sure its Retail, comes in a box, and has all the necessary product keys and windows stickers...It'll save you hassle in the future, and Microsoft, will honour their guarantee to you at least, yours is retail.

*Consumers, if you buy a new PC ask that a full version be installed NOT OEM, then you are OK, Microsoft, not the partner, will honour their agreement.

*If you are buying on EBAY, or other places, read the small print and do your research, if your OS CD is not the standard price, chances are you are not getting the boxed copy. Anything under 100 dollars for the newest version is very sketchy, and probably is not legit. You probably won't be eligible in the future.

Another note about this, and I"m very passionate as I was very upset when I couldn't offer free support, replacement Cd's at no cost or anything else, when this happened, is that this isn't just Operating Systems. Your keyboards, on the product ID, may be OEM, and your Mice also. Media centre additions, are created by vendors, just endorsed my Microsoft. BE CAREFUL if you want to buy an expensive product and expect Microsoft to repair it, or replace it, that its actually their product!

To Find product Id's or other relevant information to see if you have legit copies:
On your operating system, right click on my computer and go to properties, the second set of numbers will indicate whether you have a legit retail bought copy or a bulk license including OEM...if it says OEM, its OEM. On keyboards and mice and other peripherals, if you flip them upside down, they will have a PID, again the second set of numbers indicate how the license or product was purchased from Microsoft. If it says OEM, that's what it is, you'd better call Dell.

This may be overkill but I have seen way to many cases where consumers have had to spend alot more money then they should have because they were tricked, or misrepresented in their purchase. In the end Microsoft will get the bad name, because the online vendor for example, or seller, offers NO "free support" or guarantees.

Do your research...and happy computer shopping!

Welcome!!

Well, I'm an internet junkie, I download everything, try out everything, read about everything through all the popular sites and now I figure, I'm going to write about it too. Why not. I've got alot of advice, lots to say about new things, and I love technology and computers. I don't profess to be an expert, just someone really interested in too much information! I think that would be called "Geek" and I guess I'm proud of it. Stay tuned for all my opinions, the latest software I've tried, and things I've stumbled upon through my surfing. I hope you check up often, who knows, maybe I'll be good at this and someday make it on somebodys book mark list! Thanks for reading!

Jill
